SIG Sauer P238: Compact, Reliable, and Easy to Carry

Lightweight and compact, the SIG Sauer P238 is a .380 ACP pistol that makes an ideal firearm for concealed carry. With its design based on the venerable 1911, the SIG P238 offers the user a familiar single-action trigger, metal frame, and the high-quality construction that we have all come to expect from the SIG manufacturer.

Despite its diminutive size, the P238 is remarkably accurate, and pleasant to shoot with comfortable recoil and crisp controls. The P238 is perfect for any shooter who wants a reliable small-caliber backup or concealed carry firearm without sacrificing the quality of the firearm.

SIG Sauer P238: History

The SIG Sauer P238 was born out of a market that has been continually requesting compact, easy to carry, defensive pistols. The P238 was first released in 2009 and is based on the Colt Mustang and is essentially a miniaturized 1911.

SIG Sauer improved on the idea by providing better materials, tighter tolerances and a more dependable function. Constructed with an aluminum alloy frame and stainless steel slide, the P238 is a .380 ACP with manageable recoil in a pocket-sized pistol.

It has a single-action trigger and a thumb safety, which, makes it an unusual but appreciated option for users in this handgun class who prefer a manual safety and hammer-fired setup.

While the P238 was initially met with hesitance for its pricing in the .380 market, with some insisting it was too expensive for such a small caliber, it quickly developed a reputation for reliability, accuracy, and simply being a nice gun.

The P238 is available in a multitude of finishes and grip styles and will often include night sights and great machining, making it a premium option for concealed carry users who want more than just some plastic-framed competitors.

SIG Sauer P238 Review: First Impressions

If you’ve ever looked at a tiny .380 pistol and thought, “There’s no way that’s going to be entertaining or reliable!” I was right there with you—until I got to know the SIG Sauer P238.

I didn’t expect much at first. Furthermore, I picked it up out of curiosity, primarily because it looked like a mini 1911, and figured maybe it would be a good backup carry. But after shooting the P238 for a while, my mind was totally changed. It’s not a “last resort” gun. It’s a real everyday carry gun that performs light-years beyond its size.

Reliability

I’ve run the P238 dirty, clean, oiled, dry—you name it—and it has never let me down. I’ve fired everything from cheap ball ammo to premium hollow points. Over time, I’ve lost count of how many rounds I’ve put through it, but I know it’s well over 700. Not a single malfunction. No jams. No light strikes. It just runs.

Even when I left it uncleaned in the safe for a couple of months, I pulled it out, chambered a round, and it fired like nothing had changed. For a gun this small, that kind of reliability is impressive.

Accuracy

I’ve shot the P238 dirty, clean, oil, dry, you name it, and it has never failed me. I have shot everything from cheap ball ammo to premium hollow points, and I have lost track of how many rounds I put through it, but I am sure it’s well over 700 rounds of which not one malfunction, not one jam, and not one light strike. It just runs.

Even after leaving it in my safe without cleaning for a couple of months, I pulled it out, racked one in the chamber, and it shot as if it was ready to go. For a gun this small, that is quite impressive.

Performance

To describe the P238’s overall performance in a singular word: refined. It’s smooth. Everything about it feels as if SIG actually put effort into making this gun shoot well—not simply check the “tiny gun” box.

The slide racks with almost no effort—I actually noticed this the first time I handed it to my wife. When compared to a lot of compact guns that are hard to rack and load, the P238 is smooth and light. The recoil? Virtually nonexistent. For a .380, it’s soft shooting and completely manageable. It is one of the few guns of this size that I’d willingly shoot 100 rounds through in a single day at the range.

Ergonomics

Yeah, it’s small. I don’t think there is going to be a way to argue around that. But SIG made this gun as nice to hold as possible. With this extended mag, I can put all my fingers on it, and that little beaver tail gives me a high grip without having to worry about slide bite. The manual thumb safety clicks positively into place, and the controls are perfectly located.

It really feels like a full size gun that was shrunk down, rather than just designing something to be small. That goes a long way with how confident I feel shooting it.

Recoil

Here is where the all-metal frame really shines. The P238, despite being such a small gun, absorbs recoil better than most polymer .380s I have shot. There is not a harsh snap or muzzle flips that have you readjust your grip after every shot.

You just have soft, push-like recoil, which allows you to stay on target. That is a big deal for me. I have shot other small guns that just weren’t fun. This one? I actually enjoyed shooting it.

Appeal

This firearm has personality—not only does it offer the functionality you desire, it is pleasing to the eye as well. It is made very well, from the checkered grips to my smooth, matte stainless finish. I’m noticed by others at the range. It is not too gaudy, but it seems more substantial than it is.

And, because it looks like a mini 1911, you get some of that cool factor, without the bulk. I have had more than one person ask, “Wait, what is that?” when I placed it on the table. It definitely has some style and panache for its little size.

Is the SIG Sauer P238 Worth It?

Definitely — particularly if you’re considering a small carry pistol that does not feel like a compromise.

The P238 is one of those few handguns that has a small profile, but is actually fun to shoot, reliable, accurate, and constructed like a real gun—not a plastic toy. For those who are recoiled sensitive, just starting out with concealed carry, or looking for something pocketable without being a compromise, the P238 hits the sweet spot.

Sure, it’s not the cheapest .380 out there. And sure, it’s a single action pistol so you have to be aware of the manual safety if you are carrying it cocked and locked. But if you’re comfortable with that — and especially if you like controls similar to that of a 1911 — this is a micro pistol that feels like a little more.
